The 5th Infrared Technology and Application Conference, jointly organized by the Infrared Technology and Application Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Optical Engineering and member units, was grandly held in Shanghai from May 31 to June 2, 2024. Major universities, industry experts, and enterprise technical representatives gather together to discuss the application and development of infrared technology, jointly promote upstream and downstream exchanges and cooperation in the industry, and build a technology exchange platform for collaborative innovation.

1. Integrated Multi Task Model  Comprehensively enhance environmental perception ability

In the field of intelligent driving infrared perception, commonly used perception systems are usually based on single task models. Although these models can be optimized for specific tasks, they are inadequate for application in complex and changing environments, "said Tian Peng, R&D manager of Xuanyuan Intelligent Driving, in his keynote speech" Research and Application of Infrared End to End Integrated Multi Task Models. With the increasing demand for infrared intelligent driving tasks, the infrared end-to-end integrated multi task perception model has emerged. This model integrates multiple tasks such as object detection and tracking, lane segmentation, and target distance prediction, which can comprehensively enhance the environmental perception ability of intelligent driving.

Meanwhile, through AI model lightweight technology, the efficiency of end-to-end computing has been improved. The experimental results show that the multi task model can effectively solve the problems of multi task parallel processing, perception efficiency and accuracy improvement, adaptability and flexibility enhancement in the field of intelligent driving, providing strong technical support for the application and development of infrared perception technology.

2. New International Security Regulations Released  Infrared vehicles will usher in new opportunities

According to Reuters, at the end of April this year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated that by September 2029, almost all new passenger cars and trucks sold in the United States must be equipped with Automatic Emergency Braking Systems (AEBs). Once the new regulations come into effect, they will save at least 360 lives and prevent at least 24000 injuries annually.

At the same time, in the "2024 Thermal Imaging and Sensing Market Technology Report" released by the globally renowned industry research firm Yole, it expressed optimistic prospects for the application of infrared thermal imaging in the automotive field. From the application of infrared night vision to AEB (Automatic Emergency Braking), we are optimistic that by 2028, thermal imaging cameras will be integrated into all cars in the United States and continue to penetrate other regions around the world, such as the European Union and China

For decades, infrared thermal imaging technology has been used for night vision in advanced cars, and by 2023 there will be hundreds of thousands of thermal imaging cameras worldwide. Nowadays, many newly produced vehicles are equipped with camera based ADAS functions, providing a higher level of safety. The rating and regulatory frameworks of various countries will encourage or even mandate the adoption of these technologies. AEB is becoming one of the most highly regarded ADAS features, primarily used to reduce the incidence of traffic accidents.

In recent years, some rating agencies have emphasized that these systems have weaker performance at night when using current detection technologies. There is room for improvement in the AEB system, and infrared thermal imaging technology may be part of the solution. All of these will create a significant market opportunity for the application of infrared technology in the automotive industry!
